Prada Mode: Nicolas Winding Refn’s Sci-fi Teaser Unveiled

SCI-FI PREVIEW: Prada has previewed its upcoming Mode event in New York, taking place at the Chelsea Hotel from June 3 to 7.

For this edition, dubbed “Satellites II,” the Italian luxury brand has teamed with Danish film director Nicolas Winding Refn and Japanese game creator Hideo Kojima.

Ahead of the event, Prada unveiled on Tuesday at the 79th Cannes Film Festival a teaser film by Winding Refn that embodies the shared interests of the two creators. It features a sci-fi dreamscape atmosphere with muted warm tones and hazy, cinematic lighting, evoking futuristic nostalgia.

The six-minute film stars Winding Refn and Kojima as they travel through space, crash-land on a hostile planet, and eventually make their way to the Chelsea Hotel, checking in and receiving room keys to start their “surreal” stay.

“Throughout our extended friendship, Hideo Kojima and I have shared the feeling that we were somehow split from the same consciousness moving through different lives while orbiting the same obsessions. That idea became the spark for a film: a space odyssey following us as we traverse a sci-fi dreamscape,” said Winding Refn. “Created in collaboration with Prada, the project is both an artistic experiment and a playful exploration of new creative possibilities through AI technology.”

As reported, Prada Mode’s New York event will be invitation-only for the first two days. The event will take over the Chelsea Hotel, featuring happenings, showcases, and site-specific installations throughout its spaces, reimagined through a sci-fi lens, according to Prada.

Across the two-day private exhibition on June 3 and 4, a few of the hotel’s rooms will be turned into television studios, showcasing original and unique performances, while others will host selected guests for an overnight stay. In the following three public days, more art installations will be mounted inside the rooms and more activations will be lined up in additional, undisclosed venues across the city.
